🚨 SCAM ALERT: Fake Planning & Zoning Emails 🚨

We've been warned by the Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center about a nationwide scam that may be targeting residents and local businesses.

Scammers are sending emails that pretend to be from Planning and Zoning departments. These messages ask for payment related to land use, rezoning, or permit renewals.

What to know

• These emails often pressure you to pay by replying directly to the message.
• They may look official and reference real properties or applications.
• Many use lookalike email addresses that are not government owned. 
  Example: planning.edennc@usa.com or planning.rockinghamnc@usa.com

Important

The City of Eden will only send official emails from addresses ending in @edennc.us (jdoe@edennc.us for example).

If an email does not come from @edennc.us, treat it as suspicious.

Red flags

• Requests for payment by email
• Instructions to wire money or send payment details by reply
• Email addresses that look close but are not exact

If you receive one of these messages:

• Do not reply
• Do not send payment
• Report it to City staff or delete it

This scam is active across the U.S. and is specifically targeting people already involved in zoning or permitting activity.
