Authorized by the General Assembly in 2003, the Haw River State Park is in the early stages of development for future public use.

The first major acquisition for the state park was the Summit Center, a Retreat and Conference Center originally owned by the Episcopal Diocese. This facility is now operated as the division's first residential environmental education center and also provides conference facilities which can be rented for group activities.

For decades the North Carolina State Parks Division has considered the Mayo River a top priority for a state park in the northern Piedmont. And, within the Mayo valley, there has been a long-time interest in preserving this river.

The Mayo is a mountain-like stream in the Piedmont, carrying some of the purest water in the region, flowing through a heavily forested gorge, supporting small-mouth bass and other game fish, and featuring a rich variety of wildflowers and wildlife. In addition, the river attracts several thousand boaters annually to the Class 3 rapids at the falls at Anglin Mill where two public paddle accesses are located.
